BONSAI CARE – JUNE 2010

WATERING: Watch soil moisture carefully. Soak the ground, benches and surrounding area on very hot days and avoid getting too much water on the foliage of your trees. Salts can accumulate in the tissues of older leaves and will cause those leaves to begin to yellow, turn brown, and die.

FERTILIZING: Observe a regular fertilizing schedule.

INSECTICIDES: Spray with insecticides as needed.

WIRING AND PRUNING: Check your wiring; remove wire that is cutting into a tree too deeply. Work on maintenance of style. This includes pinching back and some pruning as needed. No drastic wiring at this time

TRANSPLANTING: Not at this time.

PROPAGATING/ GRAFTING: Not at this time

LOCATION OF TREES: Full sun up to 80 degrees, protect from wind.
Remember to rotate trees so they receive equal amounts of sun

Sensei BENNY KIM began the demonstration with a statement thanking all the veterans & US citizens for their sacrifices in the Korean conflict 60 years ago that sustained freedom in S. Korea. He also stated that he takes great pleasure teaching the history and art of bonsai, to students for the furtherance of the art form which includes the moral aspect promoting self control and honor. SENSEI KIM For those of you not familiar with sensei Kim, his nursery is located near Victorville CA at 8575 Phelam Rd., #A Phelan, CA.92371 (760) 949-7500 where he has many beautiful trees for sale on display or visit www.kimsbonsai.com THANKYOU AGAIN Benny for a great demonstration & lesson.

SSS

• It is everyone’s job to participate in and promote the club or it will cease to be an organization just due to attrition. Try to interest a friend or relative to come to a meeting, after all they are free and there aren’t many things that are these days
I will try to remember to bring a Tokonoma type display to this meeting minus the actual alcove & will use a mountain stone instead of an accent plant. Tokonoma (床の間), also referred to simply as toko, is a Japanese term generally referring to a built-in recessed space in a Japanese style reception room, in which items for artistic appreciation are displayed. In English, tokonoma is usually called alcove. The items usually displayed in a tokonoma are calligraphic and/or pictorial scrolls and an arrangement of flowers. Bonsai and okimono are also often displayed there. The tokonoma and its contents are essential elements of traditional Japanese interior decoration. The word ‘toko’ literally means “floor” or “bed”; ‘ma’ means “space” or “room.”When seating guests in a Japanese-style room, the correct etiquette is to seat the most important guest with his or her back facing the tokonoma. This is because of modesty; the host should not be seen to show off the contents of the tokonoma to the guest, and thus it is necessary not to point the guest towards the tokonoma. Stepping up inside it is strictly forbidden. The pillar on one side of the tokonoma is usually made of a raw trunk of wood.
See you at the meeting and bring a friend

April Meeting

MEETING:     Wednesday, APRIL14th at 7:00PM

This month JIM GOLLMER on Moyo – Gi (informal upright) style demonstration. Informal upright style lends itself to many collected & nursery trees so don’t miss this demo. This was scheduled for last month but the material didn’t lend itself to Moyo – Gi so Jim adapted and produced a semi – windswept.

The Las Vegas Bonsai Society meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00PM at the Nevada Garden Club Center, 3333 W. Washington Ave., Las Vegas, Nevada, 89107, (MAP ON REQUEST) visitors welcome. Call 257-4768 for directions.

Spring Awakenings Show Coming Up

March 2nd, 2010 admin No comments

Plant World April 10-11

TREES INTENDED FOR EXHIBIT SHOULD BE GRIOOMED SO THAT THEY LOOK THEIR VERY BEST. IF YOU ARE TAKING THE TROUBLE TO EXHIBIT TREES, IT IS WORTH THE EXTRA EFFORT TO PUT ON THE VERY BEST DISPLAY POSSIBLE

SOME THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN PREPARING TO EXHIBIT BONSAI…..

· All trees must be on some kind of stand (Die).

· Pots should be wiped clean of dirt and mineral deposits. Give the top an extra wipe. Mineral deposits should be cleaned with vinegar or a mild acid bath Baby oil can be used to add shine.

· Trees should be in prime condition for that time of year. This includes trees that have pests, a disease of any kind, browned leaves, etc. Displaying trees that are not in prime condition will detract from the exhibit and give visitors a poor impression of bonsai.

· Groom the tree, moss & soil. Pruning and wiring should be part of pre exhibit care. Wire can be left on and added as required, as it does not detract from the overall tree display. Remove weeds, dead moss, etc. If adding moss, take care to add it in small sections to avoid the look of new moss.

· When on display each tree is important, but also must be presented as part of the whole display. Each tree’s shape, direction, size, leaf color, age, etc. must blend to compliment each other. Mixing your trees with those of others is sometimes necessary for the overall effect,

· Make sure each tree has enough space for its shape to be seen fully.

· Do not put one tree in front of another. Multiple levels may be used when designing your display.

· Accent plants, colored cloths, screens and rocks add dimension and interest to your display area but should not detract from the trees themselves. Less is more.

· The public likes variety. Old & young trees and trees in different stages of development add life to the art form.

· THINGS TO LOOK AT:

· Leaves, trunk, roots, branches, overall shape, position of the tree in the container, health & condition suitability of the pot & stand, density of the branches, ramification, artistic interpretation, soil, rocks, moss, bark.

Then relax it’s a day to admire your trees and those of others and get new styling or display ideas.
